Over 15 bakers jailed for ‘short weight’ bread

PESHAWAR:

The food department has intensified its crackdown on fraudulent practices in the bakeries, arresting over 15 bakers for selling underweight bread at inflated prices.

Acting upon directives from senior officials, the food department conducted thorough market surveys across various areas including Hayatabad, North Market, Turangzai Market, Bangash Market, Nawab Market, Labor Colony, and bakery shops on Industrial Road.

Using digital scales, officials checked the weight of bread being sold.

Expressing their dismay over the rampant malpractice of selling underweight bread at exorbitant rates, food department authorities swiftly took action. Fifteen bakers were apprehended and subsequently sent to jail for their involvement in the fraudulent practice.

Government officials said that despite reductions in flour prices mandated by the government, the deceitful manipulation of bread weight and subsequent overpricing was intolerable.
