Vawda raises significant questions on judicial system

Senator Faisal Vawda has raised significant questions about the judicial system of Pakistan, urging Islamabad High Court’s judge Justice Babar Sattar to come clean about charges against him.

During an interview with a private TV channel, he expressed gratitude for being elected as senator, thanking the support of MQM-Pakistan and the Pakistan Peoples Party.

“I am a man of principles, I have not been elected by grabbing anyone’s feet or compromising, nor have I come by seeking forgiveness for my cases,” he said.

“I am pro-army and pro-judiciary. I believe in good and honest judges. My interaction had been with Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ayesha Malik, and Mansoor Ali Shah. Despite sitting at the pinnacle of power, they were very courteous and patient. The questions they asked me were fair. It was due to this act of theirs that I resigned from the Senate seat. Unlike shameless others, I did not grab a Senate or assembly seat by issuing statements against Imran Khan,” Vawda added.

Vawda said that he has seen judges who manipulate the law for their own gains and create new laws to suit their whims. “I criticise them because they twist sixes into nines and nines into sixes. It’s still happening today and I will continue to criticise them,” he added.

The former federal minister said that he will continue to raise his voice so that the country’s judiciary moves towards the number one spot instead of sliding down further.

“When I joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf 14 or 15 years ago, I was also idealistic. It was all about a new Pakistan, a new world, and no corruption. But everything turned upside down,” he said.

Vawda said he doesn’t personally know Justice Babar Sattar. “I think he’s a better human being or judge because his appointment was to be made during our government. However, I heard a lot of negativity about him in [PTI’s] cabinet.

“My criterion is that if someone is being very negatively portrayed, there must be some spark for which he is being criticised.”

He said that during a cabinet meeting, Justice Sattar’s name came up, and criticisms started pouring in from all sides. “I said he didn’t pass any judgment against us,” he added.

Vawda further said that Justice Babar Sattar should come clean about allegations against him. “There are allegations against him that he is running some school. It’s circulating on social media. We don’t know if they’re true or false.”
