Senate to take up resolution seeking ban on social media sites

A resolution has landed in the Senate seeking a permanent ban on all social media platforms in Pakistan over a nefarious agenda creating a split in society.

PPP Senator Bahramand Tangi moved the resolution, calling for a ban on major social media platforms and the house will discuss the matter in upcoming session on March 4.

Senator Tangi proposed restricting social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, saying they are causing a negative impact on the youth.

It also mentioned issues including spreading misinformation against national interests and creating fake narratives.

The resolution said social sites are adversely affecting the young generation in the country, and these platforms are being used for the promotion of norms against our religion and culture, creating hatred amongst the people on the grounds of language and religion.

The resolution stated that there were concerns about the use of social media platforms against the interests of the country through negative and malicious propaganda against the armed forces of Pakistan.

It mentioned promoting fake leadership in the country to mislead the young generation.
