The Israeli military said its ground troops encircled the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, the hometown of Hamas leader Yehiya Sinwar and the site of heavy fighting in recent weeks that has forced thousands to flee. Israel’s military said 24 soldiers were killed in the single deadliest day for the country’s military since it began fighting in Gaza after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
