Sindh Food Authority failed to perform its functions: CM

The Sindh Food Authority has failed to perform its main function, which is ensuring that food consumed in the province is safe, hygienic and maintained with the highest standards of quality.

Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar made this remark on Friday as he presiding over a meeting at the CM House.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Dr Fakhre Alam, Food Secretary Nasir Abbas Soomro, SFA Director General (DG) Agha Fakhar, Planning Secretary Asghar Memon and other officers.

The CM directed the SFA DG to work out a comprehensive inspection and operational plan, and check the eateries in the city in two weeks. He told him to share his findings with his secretariat and then keep posting regular performance reports.

Justice (retd) Baqar said food safety, quality and hygienic standards were not being maintained by canteens of government hospitals, private hospitals, medical colleges and even ice factories, confectioners, bakers, milk producers and sellers, and slaughterhouses. “It is the basic function of the food authority to inspect these businesses and ensure safety and quality,” he said and directed the authority’s officers to be active.

The CM said he had received reports that mineral water companies, particularly local companies, were not following the law to maintain the quality of the water being offered by them. Similarly, loose oil and ghee were being sold in the market without adopting the required safety and quality measures.
