Islamabad: The Australian High Commission, in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Journalism, organized a workshop aimed at promoting gender-sensitive reporting to raise awareness of violence against women. The event, held in connection with the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women, sought to encourage responsible media coverage and challenge cultural norms perpetuating violence.
Australia’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Neil Hawkins, emphasized the importance of portraying victims of violence in a compassionate and dignified manner. The workshop featured insights from renowned Pakistani Australian journalist Kamal Siddiqi and experienced local journalists who highlighted the pivotal role media can play in preventing gender-based violence.

Trainer Kamal Siddiqi stressed the urgency of addressing gender-based violence in Pakistan, citing the country’s sixth global ranking for the danger posed to women. The media, he argued, must actively raise awareness and educate the public on the issue.
The workshop brought together journalists, including news editors from mainstream media outlets, to exchange ideas and information on reporting responsibly about women’s rights. Siddiqi expressed optimism that such training would not only enhance journalists’ understanding of gender-based violence reporting but also foster a supportive community within the media industry.
Australia’s support for this initiative reflects its commitment to addressing the vulnerability of women and girls to violence, aligning with shared values between the two nations. Through collaboration and training, the workshop aims to contribute to a media landscape that challenges societal norms and advocates for the rights and well-being of women.
