KCR Quits As Chief Minister After Congress Defeats BRS In Telangana

Telangana Assembly Polls 2023: In the 119-seat Assembly, the majority mark is at 60

New Delhi:

Congress today won 64 assembly seats in Telangana and ended the nearly 10-year-old rule of the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) government.

Congress state unit chief Revanth Reddy and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met the governor in the evening to stake claim to form the government in the state.

The BRS, which has 101 members in the outgoing Assembly, got 39 seats, while the BJP secured eight seats. The AIMIM won seven seats and CPI one.

In the outgoing Telangana assembly, which has a total strength of 119, the BRS has 101 members, while Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM has 7, Congress 5, and BJP 3.

BRS Gets 39 Seats In Telangana, BJP 8

The BRS, which has 101 members in the outgoing Assembly, got 39 seats. 

While the BJP secured eight seats, the AIMIM won seven seats and CPI one.

Congress won 64 out of Telangana’s 119 seats with party’s state unit chief Revanth Reddy and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar meeting the governor to stake claim to form the government in the state.

BJP’s Vote Share Doubles In Telangana

The BJP, which could win just one seat in the 2018 Telangana assembly polls, has almost doubled its vote share this year and bettered its seat tally in the southern state.

Its vote share increased from 7 per cent in 2018 to 13.88 per cent in the present assembly polls. The party also secured eight seats.

“Victory Of Telangana People”: Priyanka Gandhi After Congress’ Win

As Congress emerged victorious in Telangana, party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed it the victory of the people of the state. 

“The people of Telangana have created history and given the mandate in favour of the Congress party. This is the victory of the people of Telangana. This is the victory of the people of the state and every worker of the Congress party,” she said in a post shared on X

She also welcomed the mandate given by the people of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where Congress lost.

“The people of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have assigned the role of opposition to the Congress Party. The people’s mandate is on the head,” she said.

Congress Wins 60 Seats, Leads In 2 In Telangana

Congress has secured 60 seats in the 119-member assembly and is leading in two.

KCR’s BRS has so far won 34 seats and leading on five.

The BJP has won eight seats, while AIMIM has secured five.

Telangana Election 2023 Voting: A Recap Of 2018 Telangana Elections

In the 2018 elections, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS – now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) emerged victorious by capturing 88 seats.  The Congress secured the second position with 19 seats, while the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) managed to win only two seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured one seat, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) claimed seven seats and independent candidates secured one seat.
