Election Results 2023: Battle Of Nerves For BJP, Congress

Assembly Election Results 2023: Madhya Pradesh involves a big prestige fight between the Congress, BJP.

New Delhi:
Three hours into the counting of votes for Assembly polls in four states, the BJP is comfortably leading in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. The Congress is ahead in Telangana, its sole consolation in this round of state polls

Here are the Top 10 points in this big story:

  • In Madhya Pradesh, which was expected to see a close contest, it is clear advantage BJP. The party has cruised way ahead of the Congress in the early trends.

  • The results in Rajasthan are in line with exit poll predictions of a BJP victory. The BJP is comfortably ahead of the ruling Congress and the final result may just follow the state’s trend of not reelecting a party.

  • In Telangana, the Congress would be hoping that the current trends continue. The party is way ahead of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi that has been ruling the state since its formation in 2014.

  • Chhattisgarh, which appeared to be going the Congress way in the very early trends, turned into a neck and neck fight and has now turned to advantage BJP.

  • The trends so far have also thrown up several surprises in terms of individual performance. Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao is trailing in his stronghold Kamareddy. Also trailing was Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in Patan, but he has now taken a lead.

  • The Madhya Pradesh results will hugely disappoint Congress, which had thrown its weight behind former Chief Minister Kamal Nath and given him a free hand, hoping for a victory.

  • In fact, posters proclaiming Mr Nath’s victory had come up even before the counting began. Speaking to the media this morning, Mr Nath said he was sure of a Congress win, adding that he had not seen the trends and neither does he want to.

  • In Rajasthan, the infighting within the Congress, between the camps led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot may have hit the Congress’s prospects in several seats despite the party’s attempts to put up a united front.

  • The Telangana result has yet again shown how projecting local leaders works out in the Congress’s favour. Taking a lesson from its Karnataka victory, the Congress leadership backed state party chief Revanth Reddy to the tee, and that appears to have paid off.

  • The four Assembly polls are being considered a semi-final to the Lok Sabha elections, coming months before the big fight.
