JERUSALEM — The Israeli military entered al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest, in what the Israel Defense Forces called a “precise and targeted operation against Hamas” and which doctors at the hospital described to The Washington Post as attacks on civilians. Details of the military operation, which the IDF said began around 2 a.m. local time, remain murky due to ongoing communications outages, Israeli bombardments and ground fighting that hinder access. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, IDF forces searching the hospital had not found any sign of hostages on the site, Israel’s Army Radio, which is operated by the military, said. Israel and the United States have asserted that Hamas is using medical facilities to conceal its infrastructure, while Hamas has denied this and accused the White House of giving “a green light” for the operation. Doctors and aid workers, meanwhile, have denied that militants are using them for cover.
