New Delhi:
Multiple opposition MPs – the Congress’ Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT), and Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra – claim to have received messages from Apple warning them of “state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise” their mobile devices.
Sources have told NDTV three people working in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s office also received a similar email and/or message from Apple. Sources have also confirmed the government is aware of these messages and note that threat detection on iPhones is often imperfect and incomplete.
Earlier today Ms Moitra posted a screenshot of the message in question – which seems to have been sent by Apple. The Trinamool Congress MP also claimed Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Raghav Chadha, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, and the Congress’ Pawan Khera had received such messages too.
The message in question says: “Apple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID.”
“These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do. If your device is compromised state-sponsored attacker, they may be able to remotely access your sensitive data, communications, or even the camera and microphone. While it’s possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously.”
