Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Tuesday called upon the authorities to take decisive measures to combat the alarming surge in deadly street crimes, which have tragically claimed over 100 lives throughout the current year.

Expressing deep concerns about the escalating incidents of street crime, he pointed out the distressing statistic that more than 32,000 alleged criminals remained at large. He highlighted the impact of these street criminals on the lives of the already beleaguered residents of Karachi, including the difficulty in accessing their own funds from banks. He cited a disturbing instance of three petrol pumps being looted in a single day in the Orangi Town area.

Rehman criticised the police force’s apparent focus on providing VIP security or pursuing monetary gains, which, in his view, had allowed criminal elements to operate with impunity.
