Baltimore prosecutor ties D.C. crime to Morgan State shooting

Baltimore’s top prosecutor on Friday blamed the District’s crime for this month’s shooting at Morgan State University after a teenage boy was arrested in connection to the incident.

Baltimore police said Thursday they arrested and charged a 17-year-old boy from the District with multiple counts of attempted murder for the Oct. 3 shooting that injured five people.

Authorities are searching for a second suspect, 18-year-old Jovan Williams.

The D.C. teen is wanted on separate federal gun charges in the nation’s capital for his alleged role as part of the Kennedy Street Crew. Twelve members of the gang were arrested in June and accused of running an open-air drug market on multiple blocks in Kennedy Street NW.

Police said Mr. Williams should be considered armed and dangerous.

“In the past, D.C. would worry that Baltimore crime would somehow make its way down there, but now it appears D.C. crime has actually come to Baltimore,” Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said in a statement.

Baltimore police said the 17-year-old boy was identified after their officers, alongside the District’s Metropolitan Police and federal law enforcement agencies, combed through surveillance footage from the homecoming week shooting at Morgan State.

The shooting left four men and one woman injured. All the victims are between 18 and 22.

“We will not rest until Williams is in custody,” Commissioner Richard Worley said in a statement. “While this arrest cannot undo the damage and trauma caused that day, it is my hope that it can bring some peace and justice to the victims, the Morgan community and our city.”

Violent crime is up 40% in the District so far this year, with spikes in homicides (35%), robberies (70%) and carjackings (109%) driving the trend.
