I want to wear a Gucci-inspired saree to the Met Gala: Alia Bhatt

When it comes to having a consistently strong saree game, there are very few Bollywood divas that come close to rivalling Alia Bhatt. At the tender age of 30, the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani protagonist is already hailed as a fashion icon and seen as an international star worthy of invites to the most prestigious fashion and film events held overseas. In many ways, the saree has become an essential component of Alia’s signature style—with the B-town sweetheart wearing the traditional attire for movie premieres and promotion tours and even opting for the sleek silhouette on her wedding day.

During a recent interview with Elle US Magazine, the Heart of Stone actor spoke at length about her love for sarees, confessing that sarees are her go-to outfit choice due to the immense comfort and versatility the silhouette offers. “To me, a chiffon saree is even more comfortable than jeans and a T-shirt,” said Alia while explaining the reasoning behind her clear preference for the traditional, airy, light, and effortless clothing piece. “The saree does it all at once: it has softness, femininity, and sex appeal. It encompasses everything,” elaborated the Gangubai Kathiawadi star.

As the Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva actor continued to talk about her personal style and its inextricable attachment to the drape-and-pin clothing item, Alia shared her desire to design a bespoke Gucci saree in collaboration with the luxury brand that recently brought her on board as their first Indian brand ambassador.

The Student of the Year star expressed her wish to wear a ‘Gucci-inspired’ saree to a high-profile event like the Met Gala and, perhaps, this way her way of manifesting her fantasy.

Alia’s Met Gala debut in May of this year was the talk of the town, as she was not only invited to attend what is considered the most prestigious night for fashion in Hollywood, but she was also simultaneously added to the small list of Bollywood stars who have gotten the honour of walking the Met steps alongside some of the biggest names in fashion and A-list celebrities alike.

While the Darlings actor went for a completely Western look for her first-ever appearance at the Met Gala, wearing a custom-made, pearl-encrusted, ballgown by Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung, it would be interesting to see Alia go a more eastern route with her next Met Gala ensemble and perhaps even fulfill her dream of wearing a custom-made Gucci saree to the event regarded as the Oscars of the fashion world.
