ISLAMABAD:
President Dr Arif Alvi approved remission for prisoners on Wednesday on the occasion of 12th Rabiul Awwal, reducing their sentence by 90 days.
The remission, approved under Article 45 of the Constitution of Pakistan, will not apply on inmates convicted for murder, espionage or anti-state activities, reported Express News.
Moreover, it will not apply on cases pertaining to robbery, theft, adultery, kidnapping, terrorism, financial crimes and losses to the national ex-chequer.

Apart from this, foreigners convicted under the Foreigners Act 1946 and those imprisoned under the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act 2022 will be exempt from remission.
Male inmates above 65 years of age, female convicts above 60 years of age and minors under the age of 18 years, who have served at least one third of their sentence will be applicable for remission given that their crimes do not fall under the aforementioned categories.
Dr Alvi last approved 180-day remission for prisoners on August 14, 2023, in celebration of the country’s 76th Independence Day.

According to Article 45 of the Constitution, “the President of Pakistan has power to grant pardon, reprieve and respite, and to remit, suspend or commute any sentence passed by any court, tribunal or other authority”.
The holy month of Rabiul Awwal began on September 18, with the Holy Probhet’s (PBUH) birth anniversary on the 12th of the Islamic month falling on September 28 this year.
Though citizens across the country have started preparations to celebrate Eid Miladun Nabi as tradition, festivities remain marred by sky-rocketing inflation and increased cost of living.
