Reward for escaped D.C. murder suspect increased to K as search lingers

District of Columbia police upped its reward Tuesday for helping capture a murder suspect who escaped police custody last week while being treated at George Washington Hospital.

The Metropolitan Police Department said it’s now offering $30,000 for information on the whereabouts of Christopher Haynes, 30, arrested in connection to the deadly shooting of Brent Hayward in Northeast D.C. last month.

The suspect was taken to GW Hospital for treatment of an ankle injury after he was arrested Sept. 6. Two officers were assigned to supervise him during his medical visit.

Authorities said Mr. Haynes assaulted one of the officers while his handcuffs were being changed and then ran out of the hospital. Both MPD officers were unable to catch him, launching a multiagency search effort in the week since.

“Finding Christopher Haynes is a top priority for the Metropolitan Police Department,” police said in a news release. “The search remains active and ongoing, and MPD is working closely with our local and federal partners to ensure that Haynes is brought to justice.”

Police said Mr. Haynes is a 6-foot, 205-pound Black man with a medium brown complexion.

The suspect has black hair and brown eyes with, shoulder-length dreadlocks and a Washington Nationals tattoo on his neck. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, gray shorts and white socks with black handcuffs hanging from his right wrist.

MPD said anyone helping Mr. Haynes evade capture will face criminal charges.
