Stick shift stymies carjacking attempt in Arlington, Virginia

A trio of suspected car thieves in Arlington, Virginia, left without their ill-gotten gains Monday after realizing the car they were trying to take had manual transmission.

The alleged Labor Day larceny attempt took place in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter on North Glebe Road at around 5:45 a.m. The victim, unnamed by the Arlington Police Department, was exiting his parked car when the three suspects approached.

While the police report uses male pronouns for the victim, the X account RVANOVA01, using information from the Fairfax County Police Department helicopter’s scanner, said that the victim was a woman driving a Kia Soul.

The suspects are alleged to have asked the victim to put the keys on the hood of the car. After the victim complied, the suspects “fled the scene on foot after allegedly determining the vehicle was a manual transmission,” APD said.

Attempts by officers to canvass the area for the suspects, aided by the FCPD helicopter and dog teams, were unsuccessful.

APD describes the three suspects as white or Hispanic men, around 18 to 26 years old, wearing all black clothing. Efforts to find them are ongoing.
