Five people gunned down in D.C. in violent start to Labor Day weekend

Five people were killed in four separate shootings around the District in a violent beginning to Labor Day weekend.

The bloodshed began around 1:45 p.m. Friday, when D.C. police said they responded to a shooting in the 5100 block of Astor Place SE.

Officers found Mannin Quarles, 32, of Southeast, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are looking for two suspects in connection to the incident. The first is described as a Black man, about 5-foot-7, and was last seen wearing a red shirt, blue jean shorts and black and red Nike shoes. The other is described as a heavyset woman who was seen wearing a tan shirt and tan bottoms.

Metropolitan Police said the next deadly shooting took place around 11:10 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of Farragut Street NW.

Authorities found Richard Ruffin III, 43, of Silver Spring, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead by responding officers. No suspects or persons of interest were identified.

Just before midnight, two teenagers and a girl were shot in the 1300 block of Seventh Street NW.

All three were taken to a hospital, where Mikeya Ferguson, 19, of Southeast; and Cle’shai Perry, 18, of Northwest, died from their injuries.

The juvenile girl was listed in critical but stable condition.

“This gun violence is a tragedy and we must use every tool to stop it,” D.C. Council member Brooke Pinto, Ward 2 Democrat, said Saturday in a statement. “I mourn for these families as two more young lives were cut way too short. This Shaw neighborhood has endured violence for far too long.”

Police said a teenage boy was found dead from gunshot wounds just before 6 a.m. Saturday in a residence in the 4200 block of Fourth Street SE. They identified the victim Zyion Turner, 15.

No suspects or persons of interest were identified.

The boy’s slaying came during the first night the District began enforcing a juvenile curfew in parts of the city, which runs from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekends.

It was unclear if Zyion was inside the residence at the time of his death.
