5 teens charged with carjacking, robbery in D.C.

D.C. police said they arrested five teenagers Tuesday in connection with a series of robberies and carjackings that took place across the District.

Metropolitan Police said the five teens — two 13-year-old girls and three boys who are 14, 15 and 16 years old, all of whom reside in the District — were taken into custody at about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday after they attacked and tried to rob two people in the 700 block of 12th Street, Northeast.

The victims fought off the assailants, and the suspects eventually fled in a car. Authorities said a police helicopter spotted the car and “tracked it as it drove erratically through the city.”

The teens were arrested after crashing their vehicle at about 6:10 p.m.

All five teens were charged with assault with intent to rob and unauthorized use of the vehicle.

One of the 13-year-old girls, who lives in Northeast, was also charged with auto theft, robbery and carjacking for a string of crimes that took place between Aug. 25-28.

Police tied the teen to a carjacking Monday in which one of the suspects was seen wielding a golf club during the course of the offense.

“Sprees and patterns are not the impetuous crime of a juvenile who temporarily lost control,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves said about juvenile crime Wednesday at an unrelated press conference. “They are the calculated crime of someone who is willing to threaten a life for money or property.”

He said there should be “severe consequences” for juveniles who are convicted of committing such crimes.
