Orphaned baby otter taken in by Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

An orphaned 2-month-old otter pup has taken over the hearts of those who follow the Maryland Zoo on social media.

The female otter pup, who has yet to be named, made her way to the zoo in Baltimore after she was found by rangers at a Maryland state park and needed immediate care.

Since then, zoo staff has been giving the otter pup around-the-clock care, including feedings and daily vet checks, the zoo said.

The otter has been deemed non-releasable by rehab professionals and will be cared for at the zoo until she is permanently placed at another facility at the recommendation of the North American river otter Species Survival Plan.

An otter-ly adorable social media star

The zoo has been posting regular updates on the otter pup on their website and Instagram. The latest update was posted on July 10.

“The rescued river otter pup we’re caring for at the zoo hospital has weaned off of formula,” the most recent post reads.

“Her diet now consists of small pieces of cut up fish – herring, smelt, and capelin – prepared by our commissary keepers!”

The zoo shared a video of the otter pup noisily chomping on her new diet to Instagram.

“Sound up for satisfying #ASMR snacking,” the zoo captioned the post. And fans were eating it up.

“She’s perfect,” one follower commented.

The zoo shared a close-up photo of the otter pup on Instagram Thursday. The post has over 650 likes.
