Five dead as blast flattens three-storey building in Jhelum

A deadly gas cylinder explosion caused the collapse of a three-storey building situated on the Grand Trunk Road in Punjab’s Jhelum, resulting in the loss of at least five lives and injuries to another 10 individuals.

Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Samiullah Farooq confirmed the deaths of five people and reported that 10 injured people have been admitted to hospitals for medical treatment.

Taking to Twitter, the Jhelum police said that police personnel and rescue officials were actively engaged in a rescue operation under the supervision of DPO Jhelum Nasir Mehmood Bajwa.

It said that the debris of the building is being removed with the help of heavy machinery. “All available resources are being utilised,” the DPO said in another tweet.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the collapse of the building in Jhelum and the resulting loss of lives.

In a statement, the premier commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace of the deceased.

Wishing speedy recovery to the ten injured ones, he directed the relevant authorities to ensure their best possible treatment.

A day earlier, at least seven people were killed while 14 others injured after a vehicle’s gas cylinder exploded near the Government College of Commerce in the Sargodha’s Bhalwal tehsil.

According to a statement issued by Rescue 1122, of the total, seven critically injured were rushed to the Bhalwal Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.

The bodies, of which five could not be identified, were also shifted to the same hospital.
