Six workers dead after car drives into construction zone on Baltimore Beltway

Six people were killed Wednesday when a car crashed into a work zone on Interstate 695 in Baltimore County and struck multiple construction workers.

The crash near Woodlawn on the Baltimore Beltway left the driver hospitalized, authorities said. It occurred around 12:41 p.m. on the Inner Loop before Exit 17 to Security Boulevard.

The driver of a gray Acura entered a work zone, going between temporary Jersey barriers and striking multiple construction workers before the vehicle flipped over onto its back, police said.

Maryland State Police said that six people were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

The identities of the deceased are being held while their next of kin are being notified.

In a tweet, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski offered condolences to the victims.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in today’s tragic crash,” Mr. Olszewski tweeted.

Maryland State Police have not yet identified the driver of the gray Acura, nor what caused him to enter the construction zone.

The Maryland Department of Transportation had initially said seven vehicles were involved in the collision. State police, who are investigating the crash, said a single vehicle was involved.

The crash and resulting police activity had shut down all lanes and both shoulders of I-695 on the Inner and Outer Loops between Liberty Road and Security Boulevard.

As of 3 p.m., there was a three-mile backup on the Outer Loop and a one-mile backup on the Inner Loop, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Traffic signals have been retimed to ease traffic, the Maryland State Highway Administration tweeted.

Shortly before 4 p.m., two lanes had been reopened on both the Inner and Outer Loop.
