In a letter, the ministry stated that a political party wants to “occupy” Islamabad between October 12 and 17 and dates for this “siege” clash with the date of the by-polls.

The letter said that the government will be forced to provide maximum deployment of security personnel in order to secure the capital, adding that in such a situation, there will be severe pressure on Army, Rangers and FC personnel.

The ministry said that Pakistan Army and FC personnel were already engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood-hit areas and most of the resources of the Centre and provinces have been allocated to the rehabilitation efforts.

The ministry urged ECP to exercise its powers and postpone the by-elections due to the aforementioned reasons. The letter mentions that the ECP has already postponed local bodies and by-elections due to floods.

The National Assembly seats became vacant after 131 PTI lawmakers resigned en masses on April 11, two days after former premier Imran Khan was ousted from the top office through a no-confidence vote by the then united opposition and the incumbent ruling alliance.

The ECP had announced by-elections in NA-157, Multan IV, NA-22, Mardan III, NA-24, Charsadda II, NA- 31, Peshawar V, NA-45, Kurram I, NA-108, Faisalabad VIII, NA-118, Nankana Sahib II, NA-237, Malir II, NA-239, Korangi, Karachi, PP-139, Sheikhupura, PP- 241 Bahawalnagar V, and PP-209, Khanewal VII.
