A judicial magistrate on Saturday granted three-day police remand of a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and his son in a case pertaining to robbery at a paan shop in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) DSP Zafar Javed and his son Fahad Javed were booked and arrested after a video went viral on social media showing persons in plain clothes robbing a paan stall in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The DSP’s son was among those seen in the video.

The investigation officer (IO) produced the father-son duo before the judicial magistrate-XVII (East) and requested their 14-day remand in police custody for interrogation.

He stated that the suspects stole cigarettes and cash from a paan shop in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and took away the owner in a police van before dropping him off near Gulshan Chowrangi and taking Rs10,000 from his pockets. The suspects were arrested with the help of CCTV footage, he added.

The IO said their accomplices, Rafeh and Bilal – who are private servants of the police officer – are on the run to avoid arrest, adding that the police mobile used in the crime had also been impounded.

He said he needed the custody of the suspects to apprehend their absconding accomplices and recover the stolen cash and valuables.

The magistrate handed the suspects over to the police for three days with a direction to the IO to produce them on completion of the remand.
