MANSEHRA: Residents of many flood affected villages in Lower Kohistan on Tuesday demanded the government to divert the Dubair Khawar Hydropower Project’s watercourse.

“Dozens of people, including women and children, were killed when the water swelled to an alarming position after the dam’s spillways were opened and local streams caused flooding last year,” Juma Shah Jalali, the chairman of Dubair Bala Village Council, told reporters.

A group of locals, led by Shah Jalali, said that the artery linking both upper and lower as well as Ranowali with Karakoram Highway was also washed away by the 2023 flash floods when water swelled to an alarming position after Wapda discharged water.

The village council chairman said that the Wapda had announced plans to rebuild the artery and divert its watercourse after the locals launched a street agitation and even blocked the Karakoram Highway to traffic. He said that the residents of Dubair and Ranowali were without healthcare services as all four local Basic Health Units, which were damaged due to floods, couldn’t be rebuilt as yet.
