39 dead at Ciudad Juarez migrant facility near US border

Dozens of migrants have died in a fire at an immigration processing center in northern Mexico, several outlets reported early Tuesday.

The fire broke out late Monday at the National Immigration Institute, a facility in in Ciudad Juarez, sitting near the U.S. border south of El Paso, Texas.

Thirty-nine people have died and 29 injuries have been reported so far, according to an official with the institute who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

Ciudad Juarez is a major crossing point for migrants entering the U.S. The shelters in the city are full of migrants waiting for opportunities to cross or who have requested asylum in the U.S. and are waiting out the process.
