Half Moon Bay shooting live updates: 7 dead, suspect in custody in California

The mayor of Half Moon Bay, Calif., said Tuesday that the city’s residents felt like their hearts had been “torn out of our chests” in the hours after seven people were killed and one critically injured in related shootings at two locations.

When asked on CNN what it was like to learn of the shooting in her city just one day after the mass killing in Monterey Park, Calif., that left 11 dead, Mayor Deborah Penrose repeatedly told the anchors that it was “horrific” and that the attack “shocked us.”

“Our hearts are torn out of our chests for all these individuals and families — our neighbors, our friends, the people that work in our community and live in our community,” Penrose said. “We’re a small, agricultural, coast-side town, and we have never experienced anything like this.”
